Decorating for Fall with Vintage Finds (No Pumpkin Spice Required)
Fall decorating doesn't have to mean a trip to the same big box stores everyone else is shopping. Some of the best autumn styling I've done has come from mixing a few genuinely old pieces with a warm color palette — it reads richer and more collected than anything mass-produced, and it doesn't scream "seasonal aisle."
Lean Into Warm, Earthy Tones
Fall color doesn't have to mean orange and pumpkin everything. Look for vintage pieces in deep greens, mustard, rust, warm brown, and burgundy — colors that show up naturally in older pottery glazes and painted furniture. A piece of Bordallo Pinheiro majolica in a deep glossy green does more for a fall table than a plastic pumpkin ever could.
Let Texture Do the Work
Fall is the season to bring in texture — worn wood, aged glaze, a bit of patina. Vintage pottery and French pottery pieces tend to have exactly this kind of natural warmth and imperfection built in, which pairs beautifully with the cozier feeling the season calls for.
Layer Vintage China Into Your Table
A fall table is a great excuse to bring out vintage china in richer tones. Mix in a deep green or brown-toned pattern alongside your everyday dishes, and let a single strong piece — a serving platter or a stack of Bordallo Pinheiro plates — anchor the table.
Paint a Piece for the Season
If you've been holding off on a furniture project, fall is a great time to start one. A Fusion Mineral Paint color in a deep, warm tone — think forest green, aged brass, or a rich rust — can transform a side table or dresser into a piece that feels seasonal without being literal about it. Pair it with an Iron Orchid Designs transfer in a botanical or vintage typography design for a piece that'll actually work year-round, not just through October.
Bring In Pattern with Decoupage
A decoupage project using a fall-toned Decoupage Queen or Mint by Michelle paper is another easy way to bring seasonal warmth into a room without committing to anything too literal or themed. A small accent piece — a tray, a box, a cabinet door — done in a rich floral or botanical pattern goes a long way.
A Few Easy Styling Ideas
- Cluster vintage pottery in graduating sizes on a mantel or console
- Swap in a deep-toned vintage platter as your everyday centerpiece
- Add a Handker bandana in a warm print as a runner down the center of a table
- Layer a chinoiserie piece next to something in a warmer, earthier tone for contrast
Find Your Fall Pieces
I'm always sourcing new vintage finds for my booth at Vault 44 Marketplace in DeLand, and fall is one of my favorite seasons to hunt for warm-toned pottery and china. Since these are one-of-a-kind pieces, I don't list them online — stop by to see what's currently in stock, or reach out if you're looking for something specific and I'll keep an eye out.
